The Baja Peninsula was formed approximately five million years ago when part of the earth’s crust separated along the San Andreas Fault drifting in a northwesterly direction away from mainland Mexico. After colliding with southern California, an ocean basin was formed. This basin is known today as the Gulf of California or more commonly referred to as the Sea of Cortez. Left in the wake of the collision was an explosion of natural geological wonders; a group of desert islands. The area has remained uninhabited, spellbinding and timeless. This amazing Galapagos type setting plays host to some of the rarest and most beautiful marine life encounters possible and offers an amazing environment for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking. It’s an ideal opportunity to explore, discover and learn. Rich in natural history, unspoiled in beauty, and unrivaled in marine life, the Sea of Cortez is a world of a different time, place and rhythm.

The Islas Marías (”Maria Islands”) are an archipelago of 4 islands that belong to Mexico. They are located in the Pacific Ocean, some 100 km (60 miles) off the coast of the state of Nayarit. They are part of the municipality (municipio) of San Blas, Nayarit. As of 2006, the islands are still being used as a penal colony. The islands have an aggregate area of 244.970 km². 1116 people lived on Isla María Madre as of the census of 2005. The other islands are uninhabited. The main settlement is Puerto Balleto, with a population of 602.

Isla María Madre, the northernmost island, is the largest, with a surface area of 145.282 km². It houses the Islas Marías Federal Prison which was established there in 1905. The other two islands are Isla María Magdalena (70.440 km²) and, further south, Isla María Cleofas (19.818 km²). They were named after three women called Mary in the Biblical New Testament: respectively, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the wife of Cleopas.

The smaller island, Isla San Juanito, with an area of 9.105 km² lies off the north coast of Isla María Madre.

The islands are listed from north to south in the following table:

In addition to prisoners, on Maria Madre island there are employees of diverse institutions of the federal government, such as the Secretariat of Public Education, the Secretariat of the Environment, the Secretariat of Communications and Transport, post office, and the Secretariat of the Navy.

Another group of settlers is made up of religious ministers and acolytes of the Catholic Church, nuns of the Order of Social Service, and invited teachers, technicians and their relatives.

The colony is governed by a state official who is both the governor of the islands and chief judge.

The military command is independent of the government and is exercised by an officer of the Mexican Navy.

The Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez or Sea of Cortés; locally known in the Spanish language as Mar de Cortés or Mar Bermejo or Golfo de California) is a body of water that separates the Baja California Peninsula from the Mexican mainland. It is bordered by the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, and Sinaloa. The name “Gulf of California” predominates on most maps in English today. The name “Sea of Cortés” is the one preferred by most local residents. The Gulf is believed by many to have opened up 5.3 million years ago, redirecting the flow of the Colorado River. Other rivers which also flow into the Gulf of California include the Fuerte, Mayo, Sinaloa, Sonora, and the Yaqui. Its surface area is about 160,000 km² (62,000 square miles).

Isla Isabel is 42 nautical miles (48.3 statute miles) offshore and is of volcanic origin. There are two beaches, Los Pescadores and Las Monas. The principal attraction is the fauna and marine birds, which include blue-footed and yellow-footed boobies, pelicans, swallows and sea gulls. Isla Isabel is one of the main nesting areas in the Pacific Ocean. Parakeets and sea swallows use the island for breeding from September to November. There are also some shore birds, including egrets and hummingbirds.

The island became a national park in December, 1980, and is maintained as an ecological preserve by the federal and state governments.

The University of Mexico has a research station here for studying whales, crabs and birds.
